About the event

The 2019 meetup in Düsseldorf, our first one in the beautiful hometown of the beyond tellerrand conference, was a huge success — not least to trivago being a dream host for our awesome community. We tried to repeat this in 2020, but unfortunately we had to cancel our meetup #9 due to the upcoming COVID pandemic.

One and a half years later we are finally back with a new, hybrid format: Supported by beyond tellerrand founder Marc Thiele himself we'll bring you the first ever streaming event in the Accessibility Club's history. As this is something we have to get used to ourselves, we'll stick to running this as a talk / presentation based event.

Presentation 1: Could browsers fix more accessibility problems automatically?

Accessibility best practices and standards are great, but realistically, they don’t reach everybody. Part of the web is still inaccessible to people with disabilities. What if browsers could give users the power to override the web, and fix accessibility errors in web content whenever they can? In this talk, I will discuss accessibility features in today’s browsers and share what else could be done.

Presentation 3: All Sizzle, No Steak

What you see you already have. In the US, there are more than a dozen companies claiming that if you add their widget to your site, it will automatically become accessible. They’re now starting to make their way to the EU. In this talk, I’ll show that the things they claim to add to your site already exist on your user’s computer and, furthermore, work better than these widgets.

Location

We're delighted to announce that this time the City of Düsseldorf offered us to run the event at the brand new municipal library, the Zentralbibliothek Düsseldorf, which just opened its doors on November 6th, 2021 (German language article).

The location is fully wheelchair-accessible (with accessible toilets next to the meetup room). Service animals are allowed and welcome. If needed, a quiet room is available as well. We will print and put up some signage that will guide you from the entrance on the ground floor to the meetup room on the second floor.

Important: The "2G rule" applies, i.e the City of Düsseldorf requires all people who want to enter a municipal building to prove immunization through a full vaccination or recovery. You will not be able to attend the event on-site otherwise.

We won't provide snacks and beverages at the event this time, but there's a small café on the same floor which should fulfil your wishes.
